I’ve been going to Idailas Salon / i Beauty Bar NYC Express for over four years and their glam squad is FIYAH! Idalias Salon/ i Beauty Bar is a one stop for beautifying yourself; whether it’s a cute haircut, make up, nails or an outfit before your date… it’s a win win. When you visit the salon for any of their services, you can’t help but to notice Miss Yuki Makishi, the salon’s manicurist who hails from Okinawa, Japan.
Yuki’s talent is nothing short of amazing. She started her career as a nail technician in Japan and later graduated from American Beauty Institute here in the U.S. Yuki does everything from minx nails, 3D designs, as well as hand paintings among many other nail techniques. Here, Yuki shares with us upcoming nail trends, what inspires her unique designs, and the secrets to keeping your nail polish chip-free.
DV: What is the difference between nail care and beauty in Japan vs United States?
Yuki: When I came to the states I was surprise to see that many women do not wear makeup. In Japan, you can’t go to work without make up, beauty is very important….you have to be clean and fancy. Also in Japan women do their nails every week but in the states most women do their nails when they are going out or a to a party.
DV: Tell us, what is your favorite type of style of manicure?
Yuki: I love doing pointy nails, using many colors, stones, studs and paintings.
DV: What colors or nail designs trends are becoming popular?
Yuki: During the winter we go a shade darker with gray, deep green, purple, reds and blues and when it’s warmer you go for brighter colors and neons. Also a lot of women are getting hand painted nail designs and studs.
DV: What do you love most about doing nails?
Yuki: I want all my clients to leave the salon happy and feeling gorgeous. When someone goes out I want people to say I want my nails to look like that and be envious of their nails. When you come to get your nails done with me; your nails will be #1, unique and the main focus among other things.
DV: What is the best tip for keeping your nail polish from chipping?
Yuki: A few tips to keeping your nail polish from chipping are make sure there is no oil on the nail plate before you polish. Do not put on your polish too thick, this can also cause chipping and use a good quality nail polish. Don’t forget to keep your hands moisturized.
DV: What is the biggest mistake women make when it comes to their nails?
Yuki: Biggest mistake is when women get acrylic; they do not have it removed by a professional. When you do it yourself – you are ripping your nails off making your nails weak. Also cutting your nails with a nail clipper; your nails have many layers so when you cut it you are breaking layers of your nails also making your nails weak. It’s best to use a nail file.
