Men in skirts…. apparently you don’t have to be Irish or going to a Scottish wedding to don this emerging trend. This is one of the surprising fads for summer 2012 previewed on Runways this year. I am not a fan of seeing a man in a skirt; however from some of the pictures I saw, it looks a bit sexy and stylish (a la Conan the Barbarian/ Gladiator). Still the idea of seeing men in skirts just doesn’t sit right with me. As history shows men in skirts have been a long cultural tradition in Scotland, Africa, Ancient warriors and the Goth subculture to name a few. Certain designers like Comme des Garcons, Marc Jacobs, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen all showcased skirts for men in their collections in 2009. Recently Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and Givenchy are trying to implement the look into their menswear for the coming season.
At a recent “Watch the Throne” concert, Kayne West wore a black leather skirt from the Paris designer Givenchy‘s Spring Summer 2012 men’s collection. I love Kayne’s style so are we really surprise that he wore a skirt? He has always been forward fashion when it comes to his appearance. However, I did appreciate the look he was masculine yet cool. I don’t know if America is ready to see men in skirt, but if designers can put women in “Men Pants Suits“, heck why can’t a man rep the “Man Skirt”? Fashion is about being stylish, daring and a representation of oneself…. we shall see if this trend sticks around.

It is NOT about men wearing “feminine” skirts, rather it IS about men RECLAIMING masculine skirted garments, which have always been a men’s garment, worn by men throughout every era of history and still today in many countries. Whether it is the traditional kilt, modern Utility kilt or modern day men’s skirts, MEN are RECLAIMING this garment that was always theirs!

Id love the freedom to choose, I wear a kilt at weddings and always get a good reaction.
I see nothing wrong with with wear a masculine skirt
